From clock punches to a paycheck

Every paycheck starts with the same three numbers: when the shift began, when it ended, and how long the unpaid break was. Our payroll hours calculator takes those inputs, converts them into decimal hours, applies the weekly overtime threshold, and multiplies by your hourly rate so you get a clean gross-pay estimate in seconds.

The same math works for one shift, a full week, or a biweekly pay period. Overnight shifts that cross midnight, mid-shift lunch breaks, and split punches are all handled the same way — no spreadsheet formulas to remember and no rounding surprises.

Built for weekly and biweekly timesheets

Most U.S. employers run payroll on a weekly or biweekly cycle. The time card and timesheet tools on this site mirror that workflow: enter each day's start, end, and break, and the calculator shows daily decimal totals, weekly totals, and any overtime hours that cross the 40-hour federal threshold.

Need a printable record? The output reads cleanly enough to paste into a paper timesheet, an HR portal, or an invoice — useful for hourly employees double-checking a paycheck, managers approving time cards, and freelancers billing clients by the hour.

How payroll hours are calculated

Payroll hours are the paid hours an employee worked in a pay period. The standard formula is (End time − Start time) − Unpaid breaks. The result is converted to decimal hours by dividing total minutes by 60, then multiplied by an hourly rate to estimate gross pay. Hours over the weekly threshold (typically 40 in the U.S.) are paid at a premium overtime rate.

Why decimal hours matter for payroll

Payroll software multiplies hours by an hourly rate. Working in base-60 (hours and minutes) leads to arithmetic mistakes. Decimal hours like 8.25 for 8 hours 15 minutes keep the math accurate and consistent across timesheets, invoices, and pay stubs.

Subtract your start time from your end time, deduct any unpaid breaks, then divide by 60 for decimal hours. Multiply decimal hours by your hourly rate for an estimated gross pay.
