Time Conversion Calculators

Convert between hours, minutes, and decimal hours for payroll.

Decimal hours are the language of payroll. These tools convert between common time formats and provide quick reference charts so timesheets stay accurate.

Why payroll uses decimal hours

Payroll software multiplies hours by an hourly rate. Working in base-60 (hours and minutes) leads to arithmetic mistakes the moment a shift includes 15, 30, or 45 minutes. Decimal hours like 8.25 for 8 hours 15 minutes keep the math correct and consistent across timesheets, invoices, and pay stubs.

How the conversion math works

Every conversion in this hub uses the same formula: decimal hours = whole hours + (minutes ÷ 60). To reverse it, multiply the decimal part by 60 to recover minutes. The charts pre-compute these values for every minute from 1 to 60 so you do not need a calculator for common conversions.

Reading the result

Most U.S. payroll systems round decimal hours to two places (8.25, 8.50, 8.75). Some round to four (8.2500). The calculators show both so you can match your employer's payroll format. The result is an estimate; rounding rules at the time clock can shift the final figure slightly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Payroll uses decimal hours, not base-60 time. Thirty minutes is half an hour, so 8 hours 30 minutes equals 8.50 decimal hours, not 8.30. Treating 8:30 as 8.30 underpays by 12 minutes per shift.

Before you use the result

Our calculators give quick payroll-time and pay estimates. Your final paycheck depends on factors this tool does not see, including employer policy, state and local rules, time clock rounding, paid versus unpaid breaks, premium pay, deductions, and how your payroll provider applies them.

  • Confirm pay rules with your employer, payroll provider, or HR team.
  • Overtime, breaks, and rounding rules can change by state.
